How does liposuction work?

Fat removal is done using a small metal cannula (tube). The cannula is inserted through small (3-4mm) incisions. The cannula is connected to a suction machine. The smooth tip of the cannula has openings through which fat particles are removed. Depending on the area treated, liposuction can be done using local or general anesthesia

What should I expect during my consultation?
During your consultation we will examine the areas that concern you, evaluating the amount of fat excess and skin quality. Are the results permanent following liposuction?
Liposuction permanently removes fat cells. The results are likely to be permanent unless you start gaining weight. In that case, the remaining fat cells will enlarge in size (hypertrophy). Most patients are happy with their results following liposuction. Few patients desire a touch-up procedure to further improve the results.
What is recovery like following liposuction?
Patients usually go home the same day following liposuction. We use sutures that are absorbable and do not need to be removed. Many patients return to work in 5-10 days. This again depends on which areas were treated.
Most swelling and bruising will subside within several weeks. You will be given a compression garment to wear for 3-4 weeks following liposuction. The compression garment facilitates tissue healing and resolution of swelling.
