A large number of people undergo liposuction every year because certain areas of the body simply do not respond completely to weight loss techniques such as exercise and diet. The most common areas addressed are the stomach, hips, and inner or outer thighs. However many other areas such as the buttocks, knees, arms, and chin are frequently liposuctioned.
Dr. Cuber will personally examine you in the office to determine which procedure is best for you. Sometimes, additional body contouring procedures such as a tummy tuck are needed to tighten excess skin and these procedures are frequently done together. In this example, you can see the areas of excess that need reduction. After surgery, the areas are much smoother.
The surgery is easy to go through and often takes about 2 hours to complete. We perform the procedure in our accredited surgery center where patient safety is the highest concern. Liposuction is extremely safe when properly performed, and our board certified surgeons will ensure that correct techniques are utilized. During the procedure, fluid is infused and then a tiny cannula is inserted to break up and then remove the fat. Some terminology includes:
Tumescent Liposuction - Fluid is infused to tighten the skin and help break up fat. Then the fat and fluid is removed easier.
Ultrasound - Pressure waves are transmitted through the skin to help break up fat making it easier to remove.
Laser - A laser probe is used to heat and dissolve fat once again making it easier to remove.
After the surgery, some bruising and swelling occur, but it is not usually painful. A garment is worn to help the skin tighten over the next few weeks, but patients usually return to work within a week. More strenuous activities should be delayed for 2-3 weeks. As the skin tightens, the patient should see a permanent improvement. It is important to have reasonable expectations as liposuction alone will not transform a really heavy belly into a muscular, sculpted abdomen. However, liposuction together with continuing exercise and a sensible diet can definitely help transform those “problem areas.”
For patients not wanting to undergo surgery, you can consider mesotherapy, which allows fat and cellulite to be reduced with a series of injections. While it doesn’t replace liposuction, mesotherapy can make a nice improvement over time. Email Dr. Cuber Back to top
