About Dr. Cohen

Although I grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona, I have spent my adult life traveling around the country, pursuing some of the most advanced plastic and cosmetic surgery training possible. When I returned here in 2005 in order to establish my permanent practice, a number of significant changes caught my attention.

The huge migration of people into our area has transformed Phoenix and Scottsdale into a thriving city with both the advantages of a metropolitan center, and the relaxed feel of a smaller community. The valley has also transitioned from a retirement-oriented community to a more youthful community- not just in terms of age, but more importantly, in terms of attitude. The city is now full of people who are active, concerned about their health and appearance, and are taking steps to maintain their radiance and vitality.

As a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, I always encourage my patients to adopt healthy lifestyles because people who take care of themselves before and after surgery maximize the impact and longevity of their results. Although plastic surgery can produce dramatic physical improvements, in reality there is no "quick fix" to remaining fit and attractive. It is a life-long process that involves good choices with regards to exercise, diet, proper skin care, and stress reduction.

We all want to look and feel our best, regardless of our chronological ages. Sometimes a facial, a new hairstyle, or good skin care, will work wonders. In other cases, such as exercise-resistant fat, body parts altered by pregnancy, or faces aged by time, the only way to correct appearances is by seeking help from a board-certified plastic surgeon. I have seen first-hand that when a person feels that their outward appearance does not reflect their inner beauty and vigor, they can experience a negative impact on self-esteem, energy and general well being.

Cosmetic surgery is not right for everyone, and it should never be undertaken lightly, however there are certain people who can benefit significantly. These people often come away from their aesthetic surgery procedures with a new outlook on life, increased levels of energy, and a profound improvement in their self-confidence. These improvements, in turn, often motivate people to exercise more, eat healthier, and live better lives.

If you feel that you may benefit from cosmetic surgery, and would like to find out more about the latest surgical options and advances, I would be happy to meet you for a consultation at the Scottsdale Center for Plastic Surgery and discuss some of the ways in which your hopes and expectations could be addressed. We will focus not only on how surgery can make you look and feel better now, but how lifestyle changes can keep you that way for years to come.

Dr. Cohen's Biography

Dr. Robert Cohen returned to his home town of Scottsdale, Arizona in 2005 after fourteen years of education and advanced training in some of the nation's most prestigious institutions. After graduating cum laude from Phoenix Country Day School, Dr. Cohen attended top-ranked Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to his premedical studies, he received a double major in biology and philosophy, while graduating in the top 12% of his class. Dr. Cohen received his medical training at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana- a program famous for its intense hands-on training of medical students. He received honors in surgery, and published multiple research papers including one in the most prestigious plastic surgery journal: Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

After medical school, Dr. Cohen was accepted into the highly regarded plastic and reconstructive surgery program at Dartmouth (Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH). Under the guidance of world-renowned plastic surgeons and educators, including section chief Dr. Carolyn Kerrigan, Dr. Cohen completed his plastic surgery training with top commendations from his faculty, co-workers, and patients. During this time, Dr. Cohen published a textbook chapter on technology and robotics in plastic surgery. As chief resident, he also traveled to North Vietnam on a three-week medical mission to repair cleft lips and palates in the children of Ha Nam province.

Although eligible to begin his career after completing his training at Dartmouth, Dr. Cohen elected to gain additional technical training aesthetic surgery. He was awarded a highly competitive cosmetic surgery fellowship with internationally recognized plastic surgeon, Dr. W. Grant Stevens in Marina Del Rey, California. In addition to being selected over his competition, Dr. Cohen was the first person ever offered a full-year fellowship with Dr. Stevens. Under the guidance of Dr. Stevens, Dr. Cohen honed his surgical skills in all areas of cosmetic and laser surgery.

In addition to becoming a Diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Cohen has recently published multiple major plastic surgery papers in the leading journals of his specialty including the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has also presented his research in cosmetic surgery to hundreds of plastic surgeons at global conferences including the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery meeting in New Orleans, and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons meeting in Chicago.

Dr. Cohen balances his advanced training in plastic surgery with his many activities outside of medicine. He is an avid outdoorsman, skier and scuba diver, and has explored much of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, Central America and the Middle East. He also enjoys reading, drawing, and gourmet food (eating, not cooking).
