Am I a good candidate for liposuction?

At Plastic Surgery Seattle, our best liposuction candidates are men and women who have localized fat but are not severely overweight. Good candidates for liposuction should be within 30% of their ideal body weight for safety reasons. Patients with firm, elastic skin make great candidates, and we encourage that you try diet and exercise rather than using liposuction as a replacement. There are some restrictions with this procedure, so please consult Dr. Gottlieb to find out if liposuction is ideal for you.

What happens during a liposuction procedure?

Steps of the procedure will vary slightly depending on which technique Dr. Gottlieb recommends for your liposuction procedure.

During a tumescent liposuction surgery, or standard liposuction, Dr. Gottlieb will inject a tumescent fluid into the target area. This fluid consists of saline and anesthetic to numb the area and help stiffen up the cells. Dr. Gottlieb then breaks up and removes the fat with a long thin rod that suctions the fat out of the body. The incisions are carefully hidden in skin creases where possible.

Dr. Gottlieb will describe all the details of your liposuction procedure to you during your confidential one-on-one consultation.

How long does a liposuction procedure take?

Every liposuction procedure is different, because the amount of fat removed varies per patient. Depending on the area or areas that are being treated, and the technique chosen by Dr. Gottlieb, liposuction can require anywhere from 1 to 4 hours for completion.

When can I return to work following liposuction?

Following liposuction, recovery times can vary greatly depending on the technique used, the areas being treated, and the patient's personal health. Most liposuction patients at Plastic Surgery Seattle are back to work in about 4-7 days.

How long is the recovery period after liposuction?

After your liposuction procedure, you may experience some pain, swelling and bruising. Dr. Gottlieb will prescribe pain medication to help with discomfort. Swelling may take several months to subside, and numbness experienced following surgery is most often temporary. Dr. Gottlieb will ask you to wear a body-compression garment for a short time. You can start mild exercising after about a week, pending recommendation from the doctor. You should be able to see your final result at about 6 months post surgery.

Patients with multiple areas being treated with liposuction will require extra recovery time. Remember, everyone heals at their own pace. Depending on your unique situation and area or areas of liposuction treatment, Dr. Gottlieb will lay out recovery recommendations and let you know what to expect with your procedure.

What kind of results can I expect from liposuction?

After a thorough cosmetic evaluation, Dr. Gottlieb will be able to tell you whether or not you would get the results you're looking for from liposuction. Because each patient's body is unique, no two liposuction procedures will yield the same results. However, based on previous experience with similar body types and characteristics, Dr. Gottlieb can give you a good idea of what to expect. When you come to us looking for a change, we take into account your health history, body goals, and make sure you are well informed about the risks and benefits of liposuction. We strive to make sure our patients have realistic expectations about the procedure while doing all we can to meet their liposuction needs.
