Liposuction

Liposuction can be a safe and effective procedure for patients who have developed areas of subcutaneous fat that is resistant to diet and exercise. The procedure can improve the contour of areas including neck, chest and back, abdomen, hips and thighs. Liposuction can be performed alone, or in combination with other procedures, when indicated. Developed over 30 years ago, the techniques and equipment have become more effective, allowing larger volumes of fat to be removed safely.

Liposuction is performed at the Center for Special Surgery, with the length of the surgery varying according to the area being treated. Patients will leave the surgery center sore, but comfortable. A compression garment will be worn for a minimum of two weeks to help reduce swelling and improve post-operative contour. Most patients return to normal activities and work within a week, but the recovery period will vary according to the extent of the procedures that were performed.

Patients are advised to do their "homework" before undergoing any elective cosmetic procedure. Liposuction has become the second most common cosmetic procedure performed in the United States. It is extremely important that patients thoroughly investigate the credentials of any doctor who is performing liposuction as well as the claims made by the manufacturers of technologies such as "Smartlipo™", "VelaSmooth™" and others. In clinical trials neither of these technologies has been shown to produce any significant improvements over the current liposuction techniques. The best advice is to find a procedure that is safe and effective based on its scientific results, not the marketing hype.
